Back in primary school I struggled. I mean really struggled. Struggled to fit in, struggled to be present, struggled with reading and comprehension and make any real friends. It was only when i moved to another primary school i began to see my self-worth. I was finally able to have the chance to read anything. You would think this is where I got the bug right? WRONG!
Yes, the change helped me but it wasn’t long, I mean just under two years until I thrust upon secondary school. As you can imagine, this was a challenge like what most 11 year olds would experience. Me? I felt like I had been swallowed up whole.
It was only when I turned year 8 (12-13 years old) the wind began to change. I still remember the day vividly that it happened. It was break time, my best friend and I were talking to a boy a year younger than ourselves. It was well-known he was intelligent lad and was very knowledgeable already. He was into Percy Jackson at this stage as the original movie starring Logan Lerman had just come out on DVD. Me, who had already watched the film religiously was very excited to talk to him about it. But of course, he wasn’t interested in the film, he was interested in reading the books. So what did I do exactly? Well, I commandeered the free first book my family got with buying the original DVD. It was then I begged my parents for them to get me the rest of the series.
I read them all of course and I became a big fan of Greek mythology, where I was able to recount my knowledge from Zeus to Heracles. Then, of course like any young teenager, I stopped reading again.
Until, a little known film, with the likes of Josh Hutcherson came out. None other than The Vampire’s Assistant. You thought that I was going to say the Hunger Games weren’t you? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Hunger Games fan but I loved Larten Crepsley and Madam Octa far more at that age.
So, I read the whole 12 book series of the Saga of Darren Shan of course, followed by ZOM-B, The Demonata and The Thin Executioner.
From here, I was then able to expand into many other genres. However, something always brings me back to mythology. It’s in my roots I guess.
So, that is my beginnings to one of my favourite pastimes. It’s too bad now that I’ve now graduated from bookworm to book wyvern. But I know there are far worse hobbies to have. At least I won’t be stuck on great entertainment.
