Thoughts of a Bookworm #5: Goodreads Choice Award is Fake

Hello!

So, I know that it has been some time since I was last writing to you all. But I saw an email the other day and it really got me that I couldn’t not share my thoughts on it.

As we all know it’s that time of year again. The fairy lights are beginning to twinkle, the days and nights are getting darker and colder and we are all starting to look ahead to the next year. But what comes before next year? Well, the Goodreads Book Choice Awards of course. One of the biggest events in a bookworm’s calendar.

But personally, I think the whole thing is an insult to the whole book community. Obviously, when I was younger I didn’t think any different to most bookworms. However, I have come to realise that it isn’t necessarily what is the best book of the year but rather a popularity contest. More so now than ever with the insurgence of ‘BookTok’.

Honestly, I don’t think we will ever get a book worthy of the title ever again. It has become a pure vanity project. Take me back to the Tweenies or Noughties where we actually had books worthy of its name.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some good books that have been nominated this year. But let’s all be honest with ourselves, we all know who are going to win because people are now being drawn to read the same texts just because it might be ‘spicy’.

I know this is not the case with all readers but maybe Goodreads should make a category for Booktok books so there isn’t a monopoly in other categories where other books deserve to win.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

This has been a long time in the making, but here it is. A court of Mist and Fury. I think that there is now the time to definitely say something about this, especially when the next book has already come out in the series. I genuinely do love this book. I think that it is much better than the first one in the series. This is mainly because of that in which the new characters are far more likeable, and those who we had been introduced to previously have been developed. For example, with Rhysand, I have found to be far more complicated than what had already been shown in the first book. In fact, I don't think that the first book did any justice for him. Ivy Lane and Appleby Farm by Cathy Bramley

Both of these two books are set within the same type of universe as each other. Where each of the main protagonists of the stories, have had an encounter, but also become very good friends. Tilly Parker is the first protagonist within Ivy Lane, set in the outskirts of Derbyshire, England. Which the main setting of the story is focused on the scenery of an allotment and the tight community that goes with it. Ivy Lane is set out into four individual parts, which is each season of the year. Spring; Summer; Autumn and Winter. It follows the outsider, Tilly Parker, who has only just recently moved to Kingsfield through the one year and how she develops in confidence and her new found friendships. The thing that i love out of both of these two books is that once you finish the book, you think that it is all over. But truly it is absolutely not! The Crown by Kiera Cass

It is sad you know? Seeing this all coming to an end. However, if you think about it, it won't be a complete end until i read the 'Happily Ever After' book, which has some small novellas that focus on the series. Although, i do feel that i don't really want to read it just yet as it means that it would have officially ended then for me, after all of these years. If you had been with me from the very start, my first post was actually a review of the first three books of the series. Everything seems to have changed drastically since then. If i am being totally honest, when first laying my eyes of the final cover of the selection series, may have been a little bit judgemental.
