Blog Tour: Her Name is Mercie by Chris Roy

SYNOPSIS

Mercie Hillbrook lives a simple, quiet life working as a gas station attendant. Then her parents are killed. Her home is taken. The people responsible are excused for just doing their job. When an attempt to get justice her way lands her in trouble with the law, Mercie realises she still has something to lose: her own life.

Then she finds reason to believe her parents were murdered... and she doesn't care anymore.

Alongside this rollercoaster of a novella, this book includes 4 very dark short stories.

REVIEW

One of the main thoughts coming away from this book is the themes that is expressed throughout the short stories, as well as the story of Her Name is Mercie. They are all varying in messages that are taken away after reading, but very important to discuss in terms of wider society. Some of the themes are easy to distinguish, such as authority figures might not always be the good guys and so could make the whole concept corrupted from what should be a force of good. On the other hand, other themes that present themselves are relatively harder to distinguish and not always black and white. More of a grey area, which is more like what real life can be presented as being, yet still portrays that story-time element.

Particularly Her Name is Mercie can be considered as being an interesting plot for the quick readers who want to experience thrill-seeking action within the a few pages. Mercie is thrown into a world which in some ways, could very well happen to anyone if people were in a similar situation and it is sometimes scary to think how reality could make this very possible. This in some ways makes her story arc a very compelling one, due to her ordinary beginnings, but thrown into something that can easily change anyone's sense of character if put into this upsetting situation.

In terms of the other short stories, I found some more dark than others, which is great for a book like this, in the genre that it has been written. Some of the stories were very intriguing and comes up with several questions about what we know and who we know in particular. These pieces were very short, so this is something that could be suggested to many readers who only like to read, or only have time for a small amount during the day.

Don't get me wrong however, the characters and the story itself has flaws in a relative capacity and in some cases, the stories were hard to follow and sometimes some weird reading altogether. But if you can overlook this, I think that you could enjoy it. But maybe don't read it before you go to bed if you can easily be jump scared. Either way, if you like something more atmospheric or hair-raising there is plenty of stories which you can choose from which might be suited more to your taste.

RATING: *** 1/2 (3 AND A HALF STARS)

Sunburn by Darren Dash

This is the cover of the recently published book "Sunburn" by Darren Dash (yes, it actually does feature a character getting burnt), which was published earlier than expected on the 1st May. This truly seems like a momentous event. This author has probably influenced my reading patterns the most, since I first picked up a book just for leisure. He is truly an inspirational guy. The cover itself is very sinister. The mix of reds and oranges as well as the sun connotes that the sun plays an antagonising role in the story. Maybe even a factor to all of the characters downfall. The simplicity makes it very intriguing as well as making it feel very uncomforting. Simple but well executed. This demonic masterpiece does not fail to disappoint even the most biggest of horror fans. Set in a perfect setting, the characters are strong, that even the smallest mistake they make can be very vexing. It focuses on three characters: Dominic; Curran and Martini. Who despite...

Ice Kissed by Amanda Hocking

The sequel to Frostfire in the Kanin Chronicles trilogy...       So it finally came out in May, after the very disappointing ending of the first book - Frostfire. But this time it came back with a slightly big bang. Not only do we get to the bottom of the mysterious disappearance of Queen Linnea. But also that there is something much more going on, which corruption fills the air with a metal taste.   The plot itself is largely more focused compared to the latter first book, which really only took us in the direction in terms of background and context. There is a lot more heated passion between a few characters, as well as some expected deaths towards the end.   Luckily with this trilogy, all of the three books take place of being published within 2015. Therefore, it is not a long wait until we all find out how Bryn would end up.   Towards the end of the book, I must admit that I found it to become very addictive. As there was a lot of...

The Heir by Kiera Cass

Sorry for the whole, leaving it for a month sort of thing. I've had a lot happening this past month, some more life-changing compared to some. So writing on this blog was put on a back burner for a while. This is also probably going to become a little bit of a thing though, now having so much more to cope with in my own life. Therefore i have been debating as to whether i should only post every fortnight. Because then not only will i be a bit more reliable but also, on some occassions there may be a bit more content compared to the weekly posts. I may even be able to talk about more than one book - if you are really lucky! Anyway, let's get onto the review that you have been waiting patiently for! This time i have been going back to my high piled TBR list and i picked a favourite as to which i have been wanting to read, since it was first published in May. I love the cover itself. It is so individual to the protagonist of the story. Especially when this is the second p...
